"No road runs from Gardez to Pakistan, but a frontier officer I met in a teahouse told me it was an easy three hour ride on horseback, and the frontier valleys go straight down to the Indus. The province called Paktiya, which lies between Gardez and Pakistan, was even then difficult for foreigners to visit. It is the home territory of the frontier Pathans."
- Peter Levi, The Light Garden of the Angel King

The east of Afghanistan is mountainous and rugged, and dominated by the Ghilzai Pashtuns. The current political situation means that travelling freely in this region is not recommended. Taliban and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hezb-e Islami operate in parts of the east, putting foreigners at direct risk. Always seek reliable up to date security information before making any plans.

Parts of the east remain accessible, such as Jalalabad, and the border crossing the border into Pakistan. While Ghazni and Nuristan sadly remain out of bounds, more information can be found on the relevant pages of this site.
